As a Black woman and an artist, my perspective on this subject is deeply personal. From childhood, I was acutely aware of the negative perceptions surrounding Black women's bodies in media and society. My own body and narrative rarely felt like my own, shaped instead by the male gaze, patriarchy and racist stereotypes. It wasn't until recently that I began to reclaim my sexual autonomy.

Throughout my life, I suppressed my sensuality out of fear of the gaze and the repercussions it might bring. Recognizing the oppression of living in fear was the first step towards reclaiming my power. This project is crucial because it allows Black women and nonbinary individuals to share their experiences in a society that both sexualizes and condemns our sexual expression.

Rewriting Our Stories aims to reconcile with the painful histories associated with the Black body and envision a present/future where Black women and nonbinary folks have agency over their narratives.
